That garage of yours is just sitting there. What if it could do more than just be some random structure on your property? You can actually transform the garage to make it into an extension of your home’s living space. Depending on whether your garage is attached or detached, there are some simple projects you can do to complete the transformation.
This is a popular building aesthetic in the Midwest. People take the space between the house and the detached garage and construct a covered and enclosed porch in that space. The door leaving the side or back of the house enters the porch, and you can walk from inside the porch to the access door for the garage.
The house becomes larger as a result of building an addition connecting the garage to the house. If you have a two-stall garage and you’re only using half of it for car storage, the half closest to the house becomes part of the new addition. The rooms that are created as a result make your home much larger and your two-stall garage becomes a one-stall garage accessible by the addition.
You can build a studio space (or “mother-in-law” room) above the garage. Just building up from the garage you have gives you more room. When you don’t have an official guest room, this is a great option to get more space.
Cover the concrete floor of the garage with epoxy. Insulate the garage as you would the rest of the house and finish the walls. Now this room is a rec room, man cave, etc. You can do this with half or all of the garage space you have. The side access door to the garage is like any door between rooms and spaces in the house.
Turn the garage into an office. It doesn’t take much more than adding heat and ventilation, floor coverings, and whatever you need for your business. Homeowners successfully turn garages into offices, car repair shops, beauty shops, etc.
Remove most of the walls. Add floor to ceiling windows for light and warmth. Add chairs and a breakfast table. Voila! It’s an atrium.
